George H Lovett Merchant Tokens

GEORGE H. LOVETT MERCHANT TOKENS

Although one of the 19th Century's most prolific producers of tokens and medals, engraving and striking works for any number of individuals, businesses, and organizations as well as producing pieces for sale to the public and being willing to combine dies in seemingly random manner, George H. Lovett produced only one design advertising his business! He combined this with his Cupid and Sea Serpent die, John Bull/Brother Jonathon die, and 'The Antiquary' die to strike the tokens advertising his business at 131 Fulton Street, New York.

This whimsical Cupid and Sea Serpent design is one of my favorites! SCUST refers to the creature as a "spouting dolphin" but more often you see it describes as a sea serpent. I am not sure of the meaning or significance of this image but it has been used since antiquity. This die is found muled with several others.

In his 'Standard Catalog of United States Tokens' Russell Rulau
list this muling, only in white metal, but I have not seen an example.

1860 Cupid and Sea Serpent Mules

The following pieces were produced using a cut down Cupid and Sea Serpent die
to which the 1860 date was added. Bill Hyder pointed out that some of
the original dies exhibited rim cuds so the die was probably failing. Since
these were muled with Key dies I assume he obtained the die and modified it.

of John K. Curtis, George H. later using it with his
